Dodge Ram: Comfort, Space, Functionality, and Style

21 05 2008

Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickups have been dominating the market for quite sometime now. The basic platform has not changed very radically over the years. Although few innovations have been implemented, the latest models do include some attractive features in terms of aesthetics and functionality. For instance, the diesel and six-speed automatic transmission were only recently added last year. These features enhanced the all-terrain capability of the Dodge Ram pickup. Power and maneuverability are significantly improved. This vehicle now has greater capability to traverse unforgiving off-road terrains. You can be more confident in your driving. You can be assured of greater safety and better ride comfort.

The newest addition to the Doge Ram lineup is the Mega. This is built on a more heavy-duty chassis and fitted with the Hemi engine. The cab of the Mega was re-proportioned to provide larger passenger space. The truck bed was also re-proportioned to accommodate a longer wheelbase of the truck. Additional 20 inches are added to the cab. On the other hand, the truck bed was shortened. The new truck bed length is now only six feet and three inches. This re-proportioning resulted to a more spacious cab space that can comfortably accommodate six persons. Plenty of leg room is also left.

The Dodge Ram Mega is appropriately name primarily because of the extra cab space. Compared to other pickup trucks, the cab of the Mega has roomy back seats that can conveniently be reclined. It also has enough room to accommodate separate rear heating and air conditioning outlets, reading lights, and a center armrest with cup holders. DVD entertainment system is also integrated for better ride comfort. Aside from these, enough space is left to accommodate cargoes behind the back seats. The cargo are has a capacity of more than seventy cubic feet. Comfort, space, functionality, and style are the hallmarks of the new Dodge Ram pickup.

Ford Fusion: Deserving of Second Glances

21 05 2008

If you want a sedan that stands out among the crowd, Ford Fusion is the right car for you. It is unlike other sedan models that are too bland and simply blend to the surrounding. This sedan model has a presence that is hard to ignore. Its aggressive, angular look projects the image of functionality and style. Its appeal is primarily because of its contrasting aspects. It has enough contrast to be provocative. Unlike other sedans with bland designs, you can easily be excited by this car if it is the first time that you take a glance of it.

Some of the provocative features of this car include the large headlights and the daring, broad grille. The grille is conspicuous enough to provide sharp contrast with the overall paint finish of the automobile. The grille dominates the front portion of the vehicle. It is noticeable enough to earn your car a second glance. Its thick chrome bars have a razor-like appearance, making the car look more up-market in status and price than what it really is supposed to be. On the other hand, the front bumper almost fades from view because of the two chrome strips found below it that match the chrome strips found on the grille.

The name Ford Fusion is suggestive of its amalgamated but provocative and contrasting features. It combines the best features of sports cars and luxury sedans. These features are given little boost to make them more conspicuous. Few features of this automobile model can be considered as understatement. The side panels of this car, for instance, are distinctly separated from the hood, roof, and rear deck. On the other hand, its wide track makes it truly stand out on the highway, especially when viewed from the rear. If you are the type of person who likes to show-off, then this car is ideal

Differential Gears

21 05 2008

In any automobile, the mechanical processes are not always direct. Outputs are not always commensurate to inputs. The transmission of mechanical outputs is modified in many ways. For instance, the transmission of engine output to the wheels are modified and regulated by the differential gears and clutch mechanism. The engine operation itself does not need to be modified. When extra power or speed is demanded, the engine does not necessarily have to work harder. Additional torque and speed can be accomplished by simply adjusting the differential gears. For instance, when climbing a steep slope, you need to shift the gears of the transmission system of your automobile to increase the torque.

Differential gears are not only found inside the shift gear box. They can also be found elsewhere. Differential gears are found inside the gear box of the shift lever and also on the wheel-axle assembly. In four-wheel drive vehicles, every wheel has a corresponding set of differential gears. These differential gears allow a four-wheel drive vehicle to be highly responsive and maneuverable regardless of the varying ground contours. The individual wheels are able to adjust more quickly to the bumps or unevenness of the road because of the differential gears.

As the name suggests, a set of differential gears is comprised of different types of gears with varying sizes and number of teeth. By shifting the relative positions of these gears, the speed and torque of your automobile wheels can be adjusted. In this manner, you do not need to modify the operation of the engine to get your desired output. Your car can get extra torque or speed by simply shifting the relative positions of the gears. You should, however, be cautious about shifting the gears. The clutch must first be temporarily disengaged to prevent the gear teeth from being damaged.

Basic Physics Lesson: Leverage

20 05 2008

Mechanical leverage is a simple concept in elementary physics that is applied in an automobile in different ways. It simply refers to the amplification of force. The name is derived from the simple machine known as lever. It can be in any form but in principle it is comprised of three elements, namely, a fulcrum, an input effort, and an output load or resistance. Depending on the relative locations of these elements, the lever has three categories – first class, second class, and third class. In a first class lever, the fulcrum is located between the input effort and resistance. In a second class lever, the output force or resistance is located between the input force and the fulcrum. Finally, in a third class lever, the input force is located between the output force and the fulcrum.

In an automobile, you can find different classes of levers. They are in different forms but the basic principles of mechanical leverage or mechanical advantage are applicable. One best example of a lever in an automobile is the transmission or shift lever. It is a first class type of lever. It amplifies the input force of the driver and transmits it to the differential gears. Another example of a lever is the steering arm. It amplifies the input force of the steering rack and tie rod to overcome the resistance of the front wheels.

Many other examples of levers can be found in an automobile. However, mechanical leverage or advantage is not only achieved through them. Mechanical advantage is also achieved through hydraulic means. In this case, the force is amplified by converting it to hydraulic pressure. In turn, the hydraulic pressure counteracts the resistance. To some extent, the hydraulic fluid itself can be considered as a fulcrum. Hydraulic components are commonly found in the suspension system. The shock absorber is an example of a hydraulic component.

Mercury Milan

20 05 2008

Although based on the Mazda 6 platform, the Mercury Milan can be considered to belong to a class of its own. It is an excellent choice under the category of midsize sedans. It is stylish and functional enough to compete with other reputable sedan models such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. It is comparably smaller than Mercury’s entry-level car, the Sable, but it has many things in common with the Ford Fusion. In terms of aesthetics, the Mercury Milan is impressive. It is one of the most stylish Mercury sedan models since 1939. Although it is not as daring as the Mercury Turnpike, it projects an image of ergonomic modernity.

Mercury Milan has enough room to comfortably accommodate five adults. Its interior space is more spacious compared to other expensive cars under the same category. Its interior is luxurious and comfortable primarily because of the materials that are used. From the leather upholstery to the carpet, from the exquisite panels to the high-tech electronics, the interior of the Mercury Milan is a testament to modernity and ergonomics. The internal climate system is dependable, maintaining the highest possible level of comfort. The entertainment system, on the other hand, will keep you from being bored while driving.

This automobile model is available in two types of engines, namely, the four-cylinder and the V6 engines. Whichever option you may choose, both are sufficient enough to respond to your everyday driving needs. However, these engines are not as powerful compared to those being offered by other competitors. The automobile model with V6 engine, for instance, has a 26-mpg EPA highway rating. It features a six-speed automatic transmission. This gives this particular automobile model better acceleration and also better fuel efficiency compared to automobiles with five-speed automatic transmission. Finally, when it comes to ride comfort, the suspension system provides smooth and easy handling.

Air Dams

20 05 2008

Speed is one of the most important parameters of your automobile performance. It is a direct translation of engine output that is measurable and observable. Speed is particularly important especially when it comes to racing. Speed determines the difference between winning and losing. Your engine might be powerful and efficient but all of these are virtually useless if they are not converted into actual work performance. Although engine performance is the main factor of speed, many other factors affect sped. Wind resistance or wind drag, for instance is one factor that affects speed. It can be reduced by designing a more streamlined body. Air dams help in this aspect. These are optional features that can later be added to your automobile.

In terms of function and purpose, air dams are basically similar to the wing-like spoilers found on rear portion of your automobile. They also reduce wind drag and minimize lift. Unlike the wing-like spoilers, air dams are more subtle features. They are found in front of your automobile just below the bumper. They are metal or fiberglass panels that have holes in them. The wind is channeled through these holes. In this manner, airflow under the automobile chassis is reduced. On the other hand, the airflow to the radiator is increased. This significantly improves the heat-dissipation capacity of the radiator.

Unlike the wing-like spoilers, the air dams do not directly provide down force. However, they improve the tire traction by reducing the lift. This is accomplished by minimizing the airflow under the chassis of the vehicle. Less airflow under the chassis means greater mobility for the automobile. The engine output is optimized. Less energy is spent in counteracting wind drag. You can significantly improve the speed and aesthetic appeal of your automobile by installing air dams. Your automobile will not only be more efficient, it will also become more attractive.

Mitsubishi Lancer: The Makeover

13 05 2008

Most so-called “new” automobile models, the real changes are only superficial. The eternal appearance may be different but the materials used and the design platform are basically the same compared to the previous models. The changes are merely cosmetic covers. The new car model is basically the same as the previous model. The getup is the only thing that changed. However, this is not the case when it with the new Mitsubishi Lancer. This new automobile mode is a complete remake. It is the new entry of the car manufacturer to the compact sedan class. It is not just a mere clone of the previous models wearing different set of clothes. It is a new car when it comes to its different aspects – from the sheet metal to mechanical to upholstery and interior trims.

Mitsubishi Lancer is a class of its own. The body has been re-designed to give it a more aggressive look. The fascia and general profile of this new model are truly impressive and worth second glances. However, the result is mixed. At front view, it looks sharp and sporty but it gets a little dull when viewed from the rear. On the other hand, the proportions are balanced, creating an overall attractive aesthetic appeal.

Aside from the aesthetic and structural aspects, the mechanical aspect is also greatly improved. Mitsubishi Lancer is equipped with a new engine. Although the new engine has the same displacement as the previous engine, it now has a double overhead cam. It also has updated electronics. The engine power output is increased by 32 horsepower and the torque by 16 pound-feet. A new variable transmission system, on the other hand, replaced the automatic system. It features a five-speed manual still and standard gearbox. The mileage is also significantly improved. Its engine is now capable of 5-mile run for every gallon of gasoline. The overall efficiency has improved.

Subaru B9 Tribeca: Testament to Safety

13 05 2008

Like its namesake, the Subaru B9 Tribeca is upscale and trendy. It is not irrationally expensive. It has all the amenities and features that justify its price. It is a mid-size SUV which can comfortably seat seven persons. Considering its overall dimension, it can be considered to be at the same category with Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano. It is also comparable to a Ford Explorer in terms of size. It is not, however, all about size and poise. It is also about engine output. It is powerful enough to tow up to 3,500 pounds of load. It is a highly competitive model that has a long list of standard and also innovative features.

Although Subaru is far from becoming as luxurious as Mercedes-Benz or BMW, it is becoming a premium brand worthy of being classified within its own class. When it comes to the technology underneath, this SUV is truly impressive. It has a state-of-the art safety and performance features that give assurance to the driver. You can be more confident driving this vehicle not only because of its stylish look but also because of its inconspicuous features. It is not surprising that last year this model was awarded the highest possible rating in the NHTSA federal crash tests. It has earned five stars for the frontal and side-impact tests. On the other hand, it garnered four-star rating for rollover resistance tests.

The latest Tribeca model is designed for greater safety. It features a rollover sensor that automatically operates the seatbelt pre-tension mechanisms and also automatically deploys the curtain airbags. During extreme driving conditions, you can be more confident that you and your passengers are safe from injuries. On the preventive safety aspect, the Tribeca B9 features impressive brake features that assure extensive range of dynamic handling technology. These include the four-channel anti-lock brakes. It also includes four-wheel traction control.

Center of Gravity

13 05 2008

Your automobile stability is dependent on the way the center of gravity shifts. If it shifts too haphazardly or too far from the central axis, your vehicle is highly unstable. Your vehicle will have the tendency to rollover when making sharp cornering or sudden turn. The center of gravity refers to the concentration of weight. It has to be always at, or at least near, the center of the symmetry and at the bottom of the automobile. When you are driving your automobile, the center of gravity continually shifts because of the unevenness on the road and also because of the engine vibrations.

Broader, lower, and heavier vehicles tend to be more stable precisely because their centers of gravity tend to be kept near the center of symmetry and at the bottom. These types of vehicles are ideal for off-road driving because of their stability. Jeeps, sport utility vehicles, and pickup trucks are ideal for rough, off-road driving because they are stable. You can be more confident that these vehicles will not end up at the bottom of a ravine when climbing a steep slope. Your automobile is safer if it has stable center of gravity. Aside from the aforementioned factors, many other factors affect the stability and safety of your vehicle.

The traction and suspension also directly affect the stability of your vehicle. Traction refers to the friction attraction between the tires and the ground while suspension refers to the system that compensates for vehicular vibrations. Good traction means that the automobile will not easily skid or rollover. Meanwhile, good suspension means that the weight of the automobile will be equitably distributed among the wheels. Conversely, traction and suspension are also affected by the center of gravity itself. If the center of gravity is stable, traction and suspension is also stable. The wheels will not easily jump from the ground and vibrations will be lesser.

Brake System

9 05 2008

When it comes to the safety of your automobile, the brake system serves a crucial role. The brake system allows your automobile to slowly or abruptly stop, depending on the need of the situation. In this manner, accidents can be prevented. It arrests the momentum and inertia of your vehicle so that collision can be avoided or at least the extent of damage can be minimized. Merely stopping the engine will not accomplish the task. Your vehicle still has enough inertia and momentum to keep on moving even when the engine is already switched off. The brake system allows you to safely control the motion of your vehicle.

Brake systems are classified into two categories, namely, the drum brake system and the rotor brake system. The former is the older type of brake system. It is a bulky and sophisticated type of brake system. It is commonly used in bigger cars. It is also used in combination with the rotor brake system. Its name is derived from the name of its main brake component – the brake drum. This component serves as the housing for the rest of the brake components and it also serves as the brake surface.

As you have correctly guessed, the name of the rotor brake system is derived from its main brake component – the brake rotor. Unlike the brake drum system, the rotor brake system is comparably more compact and less sophisticated. Instead of internally containing the other brake components, this brake system has exposed parts. Instead of brake shoes, it utilizes brake caliper. The brake caliper acts like a clamp that grips the rotating brake rotor. In this manner, the wheel is stopped from rotating. Like in the drum brake system, the rotor brake system also utilizes hydraulic components and brake pads. These are the two components that are common in both types of brake systems.
